The many 'miracle' cures out there claiming to help reduce the appearance of fat deposits that show as dimples on your thighs, butt or arms, is overwhelming to say the least. So to separate the fact from the fiction we asked Felice Kosakavich, Chief Clinical Dietitian for Cassena Care, to myth-bust and these six truths are reassuring - and refreshing - to read:

1. CARDIO EXERCISE CAN REVERSE CELLULITE: MYTH.

"One study by researchers at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, Massachusetts, found that adults who did three 30-minute aerobic workouts each week for eight weeks lost four pounds, but gained no muscle—and only slightly improved body composition. Cellulite requires a multi-faceted approach to make real progress."

10 TRICKS FOR DRINKING THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF WATER EVERY DAY

When you feel thirsty, you’re already in the early stages of dehydration.

Come 3 p.m. every day, I usually realize the only liquid I’ve consumed that day has been a coffee and a few sips of water at lunch. I rarely truly feel thirsty, and, frankly, I don’t love drinking water.

The problem is that by the time that 3 p.m. thirst hits, it means I’m already in the early stages of dehydration. Even a drop in just two percent of our body’s water content can lead to short-term headaches, dry skin, lethargy, and digestive problems. Dehydration can take an even bigger toll on your body with long-term effects such as high blood pressure, kidney problems, joint pain, and weight gain. So it’s important to drink the recommended daily amount of water, even when you aren’t thirsty.

Because I’m trying to be as healthy as possible, I’ve had to find a few tricks to help me drink the Institute of Medicine’s recommended 91 ounces of water every day without really having to think about it . . . much.

01. DRINK FIRST THING IN THE DAY

Like brushing my teeth, drinking a glass of water is now one of my top priorities for a productive morning. After a long night’s sleep, we wake up dehydrated. Drinking water before I check my phone ensures that I’m starting my day hydrated, as water gives our bodies a metabolism boost. Keep a full carafe at your bedside and soon enough, drinking a glass of water will become another mindless, sleepy morning task.

02. CREATE A WATER SCHEDULE

Being aware of how much water I drink and when I drink it has helped me keep track of my fluid intake every day. To help reach 91 ounces a day, I grab a bottle with ounce markers on it and develop hourly goals. I decide that I’ll drink, say, 20 ounces by 10 a.m., 40 ounces by noon, 65 ounces by 3 p.m., etc. These hourly goals will push you to finish that bottle.

03. FIND A BOTTLE YOUR LIPS WILL LOVE

I hate drinking water from a plastic cup because of the ways it makes the water taste and feel in my mouth. I realized that I drink more when it’s out of something I like. I’ll also drink more if it’s a bigger bottle (aka less trips to the faucet). So I always drink from glass bottles or cups, such as a classic mason jar. If you hate drinking water, try investing in a bottle or glass you really like. Try bkr if you like glass but are afraid of breaking it; its silicone sleeves come in a plethora of pretty colors, and they’ll replace the glass bottle for free if it breaks. If you prefer your water cold, a Hydroflask steel bottle keeps liquids chilled for up to twenty-four hours.

04. DILUTE YOUR OTHER FLUIDS

At the gym, I love to drink sports drinks, so I like to cut them in half (half water, half Gatorade) to trick myself into drinking more water. You don’t have to work out to apply this same trick to your life. If you like to drink sports drinks, juice, or tea throughout the day, double your hydration by diluting other beverages with water. It may take some time getting used to the change in taste, but I’ve found that now when I don’t dilute my sports drinks, they taste way too sweet.

05. ADD SOME ALL-NATURAL FLAVOR

I often add some natural flavoring to water because I don’t love it plain. When I say natural, I don’t mean store-bought “natural” flavoring. I’m talking about real fruit. I love to add a mix of blackberries, sliced lemons, and raspberries to a big pitcher of water that I keep in the fridge for when I’m craving a bit of flavor, but you can add any fruit you like. Try lemon, orange, and lime for a citrus flavor. If you don’t feel like cutting up fruit, add a few drops of lemon essential oil. You’ll get the same effect without all the work. Or make infused water on the go with an infuser water bottle.

06. DRINK YOUR MEALS

Replacing some meals in smoothie or juice form has helped me drink my water along with eating a healthy meal. Two birds, one stone!

07. HAVE A GLASS AT EVERY MEAL

You may be a fanatic coffee or soda drinker, and that’s OK. You don’t have to change that to drink more water. Instead, always have a water along with your other drink of choice. When I go out to eat, I always ask for a water. Then I finish at least one glass by the time I leave. Plus, it’s free!

08. SNACK ON WATER

Forgive me for going on an “eat your fruits and veggies” spiel, but my motives are different than your usual. Yes, these foods give you many nutrients and vitamins, but they also contain lots of water. Eating water-rich foods such as cucumbers (96.7 percent water), watermelon (91.5 percent water), and strawberries (91 percent water) has helped me get some of my daily intake while having an afternoon snack.

09. TAKE IT WITH YOU

It always happened: I’d be walking along and see a water fountain but didn’t have a bottle to fill. I’d be stranded without a way to refuel except for a few measly sips from the fountain—hardly enough to hydrate properly. Have a water bottle with you at all times, even if it’s just a small one. Keep it at your desk, in your car, or in your purse, so you can fill up no matter where you are.

10. THE NEW NIGHTCAP

While getting a full seven to nine hours of sleep is great for your body, it’s a long stretch to go without any H2O. Hello, dehydration. One of the last things I do before plugging in my phone to charge and getting in bed is to sip water, which helps my body prepare for the next day.

Skin anatomy and the implications for skin rejuvenation

Your skin protects your internal organs, nerves, muscles and blood vessels from damage. The epidermis, the thin outermost layer of skin, protects you from the harmful effects of sunlight, bacteria and environmental toxins. The epidermis is also responsible for the look and health of your skin.

The outermost layer of the epidermis — the stratum corneum — is relatively waterproof and prevents most bacteria, viruses and other foreign substances from entering the body. The stratum corneum helps maintain the skin’s homeostasis, the relatively constant conditions in the internal environment, while continuously interacting with and adjusting to changes originating within or outside the system. Damaging the stratum corneum interferes with the skin’s equilibrium.

Some skin care products and skin rejuvenation procedures remove or temporarily damage the stratum corneum. Exfoliation removes the epidermis to get rid of dead skin cells, resulting in a healthy glow. Exfoliating too often, however, can cause skin problems. Removing too much of the skin’s protective barrier may cause inflammation, dryness and sun sensitivity. Over-exfoliating damages the stratum corneum, may cause over- or under-production of sebum and may accelerate the aging process. If you remove the stratum corneum, cosmeceuticals may cause inflammation instead of improving your skin’s appearance. If you see signs of inflammation, such as excessively red, tight or dry skin, you need to decrease the frequency (or strength) of your exfoliation routine.

Microdermabrasion involves spraying tiny crystals onto the skin to gently remove the skin’s outer layer. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation procedure that leaves skin looking softer and brighter. Your skin will be photo-sensitive after microdermabrasion, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid sun exposure for a few days after the procedure.

Chemical peels cause controlled erosion of the epidermis. Chemical peels lead to exfoliation and removal of superficial lesions, followed by regeneration of new epidermal and dermal tissues.

Laser resurfacing removes the epidermis and shallow dermis, stimulating the healing process. This results in an overall tightening of the skin. However, laser resurfacing results in greater inflammation than micro-needling and, therefore, may lead to dyspigmentation in patients with darker skin types.

Cosmetic micro-needling leaves the epidermis mostly intact and doesn’t significantly damage the stratum corneum. Therefore, your skin retains its natural barrier against pathogens, UV radiation and damaging free radicals. The term "Cellulite" originated from the French language and only became widely used in the 1960s.

Statistics show that 9 out of 10 women over the age of 30 will develop some form of cellulite. The development of cellulite has prevented many women from enjoying their time on the beach and even limited their choice of fashion significantly. With many women experiencing dimpled skin, it inevitably leads to the birth of certain myths and rumors.

First and foremost, cellulite is not fat. Instead, it is the result of fat being divided into small pockets within the skin. Therefore, losing weight will not directly aid in eliminating cellulite. On the other hand, excessive sun exposure does not cause cellulite to form, but they possess the ability to make them more noticeable.

Causes of Cellulite

To make things clearer, we reached out to several dermatologists to get to the bottom of what really counts when you’re trying to beat both Father Time and Mother Nature.

1. You’re applying sunscreen incorrectly.

Yes, we’ve all heard that sunscreen is the single most important step we can take in the fight against wrinkles and lines. It’s believed that around 80 percent of the visible signs of aging come from sun exposure. But it’s important not to forget to reapply and apply it on all the right spots, dermatologist Joel Cohen stresses.

“Many ladies that come to see a dermatologist for either aesthetic or medical purposes are insufficiently protecting their skin,” Cohen told The Huffington Post.

Simply wearing sunscreen or a foundation that contains sun protection isn’t enough. You need to make sure the sunscreen contains the right ingredients and make sure you’re reapplying about every two hours you’re in the sun. And make sure you look for one with broad spectrum sun protection.

But here’s the really critical part. Your face isn’t the only part to show signs of aging.

“Ladies should NOT forget sunscreen on their hands, ears, chest and lips. Many ladies try to be so careful to protect their face and forget about these other areas,” Cohen said.

2. You’re not sleeping enough.

“Many women after menopause have trouble sleeping through the night,” dermatologist Patricia Farris told The Huffington Post. With hot flashes and night sweats, it’s no surprise that getting comfortable can be difficult.

If you’ve resigned yourself to sleepless nights, Farris says it’s crucial to act fast.

“It’s important to discuss this with your physician since lack of sleep makes skin dull, puffy and exacerbates dark circles,” Farris said. Some studies have actually shown that lack of sleep can speed up the aging process.

A good example of this is the frontalis muscle in the forehead that keeps our eyebrows elevated. So I tell patients that less is more with Botox as we age and proper placement is essential.”

5. You’re shelling out the big bucks for a miracle cream.

We’ve all heard the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” but dermatologists say this doesn’t always mean the more expensive or “organic” products are going to perform better.

“There are a lot of expensive creams and serums out there, but make sure they have an active ingredient that can do something beneficial for your skin beyond just being a good moisturizer,” Cohen said.

Consumer Reports tested several anti-aging creams, from modestly-priced drugstore brands to high-end potions that cost several times as much and found price and efficacy actually have no correlation. There are a lot of areas of beauty where it’s okay to skimp. Your manicure, your haircuts and your makeup can all be put on the back burner when life gets busy, but your skin is not the place to neglect. While we all know we should be washing our face twice a day and using a cleanser that works for our skin type, there are some mistakes that practically everyone is guilty of making. To help you get your best skin possible, we’ve put together a list of the 10 skin mistakes you’re making — and how to fix them.

1. Not using a moisturizer with SPF every day: Summer, winter or any time of year, your facial moisturizer should have an SPF of at least 15 if not more. While makeup with sunscreen is a good thing, it won’t give you the kind of coverage you get with a lotion. Even if your only time outside consists of walking to your car or the subway, your skin is always at risk of catching some harmful UV rays and, ultimately, damage.

2. Not patting dry: Especially if you have sensitive skin, take care to pat your face dry rather than rub after you’ve cleansed. The tugging of a towel can cause irritation, plus years of tugging at your skin can make it lose elasticity. When you rub around your eyes, dark spots are more likely to form. Take extra care to pat, and be sure you’re using a different towel than the one you use to dry your hands.

3. Cold, Dry Climates

Cold temperatures often accompany low humidity that dries your skin. Bitterly cold winds can also dehydrate skin. During the winter months, your skin may become rough, red, tight, cracked or peeling due to dryness. Some skin conditions such as eczema can flare up in dry weather. To combat dry skin and control eczema, avoid long, hot showers or baths, use a mild soap to soothe your skin and moisturize daily. Hot, Humid Climates

Changing Climates

Ever see an old photo of yourself and cringe at your dated-looking clothes or retro hairstyle? Check out these common mistakes to make sure your skin care routine is fresh, up to date, and suits your natural beauty.

The rut: 'I scrub and exfoliate daily but my skin isn't looking better.'

Be gentle with your face. Overdoing scrubs and exfoliating brushes can make your skin oiler, irritate it, and give you redness and even dark spots. That can make your pores look bigger.

Use scrub cleansers once daily and exfoliation brushes no more than three times a week.

The rut: 'I've been using the same skin care products for the last 20 years.'

Who should consider microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is somewhat useful for people with dull or sallow skin, mild acne, acne discoloration, pick marks, and very superficial acne scars. Microdermabrasion may be a good treatment option for patients with superficial skin problems and busy lifestyles who are looking for minimal benefits with virtually no side effects or downtime. Individuals with deeper acne scars may expect a much longer series of treatments or likely benefit from physician-performed surgical dermabrasion, chemical peeling or laser resurfacing.

How does microdermabrasion work?

Traditionally, a crystal microdermabrasion system contains a pump, a connecting tube, a hand piece, and a vacuum. While the pump creates a high-pressure stream of inert crystals, such as aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate, to abrade the skin, the vacuum removes the crystals and exfoliated skin cells. Alternatively, the inert crystals can be replaced by a roughened surface of the tip in the diamond microdermabrasion system.

Unlike the crystal microdermabrasion system, the diamond microdermabrasion machine does not produce particles from crystals that may be inhaled into a patient's nose or blown into the eyes. Hence, diamond microdermabrasion is safer for use on areas around the eyes and lips. Generally, the slower the movement of the hand piece against the skin and the more numbers of passes over the skin, the deeper the treatment.

What ages are appropriate for microdermabrasion?

While there are no specific age or sex restrictions, typically children over age 12 up to adults age 65 can get microdermabrasion. While there is no age maximum, mature skin over age 70 may have slightly higher risks of bruising and skin abrasions. Individuals younger than age 12 may sometimes also receive treatment under the care of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

How often can I have microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion can be done as frequently as weekly or up to every eight weeks depending on your skin's tolerance and desired cosmetic effects. Many people choose to start with weekly treatments for three sessions, then change to a monthly maintenance regimen.

Much like brushing your teeth, microdermabrasion helps to gently remove skin debris. Before starting the microdermabrasion treatment, eye protection such as eye pads or goggles may be placed. Often the skin may be prepared and cleaned of makeup and oils. Yet, no tlocal anesthetic is required. The skin will be stretched to provide some tension in order to achieve the most effective abrasion and vacuum. The hand piece is moved over the skin with repeated single, smooth passes. Usually, two to four passes per area are sufficient.

Mild pinkness of the skin is the desired outcome and usually resolves within minutes to hours after microdermabrasion. In addition, mild exfoliation of skin may occur as well. Continuously apply moisturizer or ointment if exfoliation occurs. Patients may also experience mild sunburn-like sensation for a few days. Moreover, liberal application of sunscreen is recommended as photosensitivity may be increased after treatment.

Microdermabrasion may help stimulate the production of collagen, thereby helping skin rejuvenation. As age spots from photoaging and fine lines are diminished, the skin may become softer and smoother. The results are modest, however.

Does microdermabrasion help with acne scars?

Microdermabrasion may be very useful for people with active acne, mild acne discoloration, pick marks, and very superficial or raised acne scars. Dermatologists use microdermabrasion to help unclog pores and clear acne. Often used in combination with gentle glycolic peels and medical acne extractions, microderm can help speed up acne clearing.

Individuals with deeper acne scars might be candidates for surgical dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.

Can microdermabrasion help with melasma?

Yes, microderm can be helpful in treating melasma and other types of hyperpigmentation.
